Blue guitar

"C'est moi" is French for "It's me."

In "The Man with the Blue Guitar" Stevens says in canto XII, "Tom-tom, c'est moi./ The blue guitar and I are one." In this poem about the interaction of reality and imagination, the blue guitar becomes the locus of the imaginative act, which integrates and shapes reality until the division between them dissolves. The "tom-tom" (as a reference to drums, another musical instrument) is an analogue for the blue guitar, and by identifying himself with this imaginative production, Stevens is collapsing the instrument into its human agent--the "man of imagination" or, more specifically, the poet himself, who becomes the shaper of reality.
