Bonnie and Josie are the two characters in Stevens' poem "Life is Motion." Though we do not know their ages or backgrounds, Stevens seems to indicate that these women are able to fully and purely experience nature. Set in Oklahoma, this short poem paints a poignant picture in the mind of the reader. The title of the poem suggests that to fully live requires motion, much as Bonnie and Josie dance around the tree stump.

"Life is Motion" []

In Oklahoma,
Bonnie and Josie,
Dressed in calico,
Danced around a stump.
They cried,
“Ohoyaho,
Ohoo” …
Celebrating the marriage
Of flesh and air. [1]
