The blue woman is mentioned in the second canto of the third section "It Must Give Pleasure" in "Notes Toward a Supreme Fiction," and is often thought to be a muse-like figure. Because there is much language here referring to sexualization and religion, some scholars believe that the blue woman is referring to an image like that of a stone statue--almost idol-like. She is set in her beliefs, and it seems there is no talking her out of them: "It was enough for her that she remembered" (lines 9-10, 17).
